Gratitude: Modin Anachnu Lach

Gratitude
There’s only one surprise — to be alive— and that may be forgotten daily if daily not remembered.

In an experimental comparison, those who kept gratitude journals on a weekly basis exercised more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic about the upcoming week compared to those who recorded hassles or neutral life events.

A related benefit was observed in the realm of personal goal attainment: participants who
kept gratitude lists were more likely to have made progress toward important personal goals
(academic, interpersonal, and health-based) over a two-month period compared to subjects
in the other experimental conditions.

Mindfulness/Conscious Living

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness means active awareness, sensitivity to process (versus
outcome), conscious control over our thoughts and behaviour, attending to context, and trust of our intuition... our minds constantly create patterns. The mind generalizes prototypes from our experiences into patterns that enable us to react appropriately in new situations that have similar problem-solving needs. This helps us walk through doorways, skim newspapers, and pay bills. But sometimes we need to turn off our "autopilotespecally it the pattern is one that we do not want to continue. Interrupting the patterns that we would like to change by increasing our mindfulness provides us with the opportunity to make a conscious choice instead of continuing to operate by automatic reflexes.

Milestones and Free Will

Life cycle transformations are referred to as liminal moments because we come out of them in some way permanently changed and transformed.
The planning and preparation leading up to these liminal moments push us to acknowledge and find meaning in the transition as we move from one stage of life to the next.
Judaism helps us to divide a lifetime into meaningful occasions and stages.

But the question is, Do we have any control over the different stages of our lives or they just happen when we reach them? By control we mean, if we make those transformations worthwhile to celebrate?

Our free will plays an important role in making life cycle events filled with meaning and purpose. We can have control over the significance of our changes if we choose to have a meaningful and rich experience a the different stages of our lives.
