Bar/Bat Mitzvah
When Jewish children enter adolescence, it is an exceptional time in our religion. We welcome any and all families who wish to celebrate their child’s growth into adulthood and Judaism at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue.
The preparation for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah can take between ten to twelve months, depending on your child’s familiarity and comfort level with Hebrew and speaking in public. The first step would be to meet with Hazzan Abittan to introduce your child and discuss the specifics of the date, the reading of that week and other details about this joyous occasion. Over the years he has taught over 500 children their readings, and he enjoys working with children. He feels that it is his mission to teach with enthusiasm and to encourage everyone to do the best of their ability.
Once engaged, your son or daughter will meet with Hazzan Abittan one time per week during that period of time, so that the Cantor can educate and tutor them in preparation for their big day. During this time, your child will also be tutored in Jewish values pertaining to their Bar or Bat Mitzvah by the Rabbi or Rebbeztin. Rabbi Orenstein is also always happy to bless your son or daughter during the ceremony.

If your daughter is not interested or comfortable in having her Bat Mitzvah on her own, please note that the Youth Section also organizes a Group Bat Mitzvah Program for 11- and 12-year-old girls so that they may celebrate their coming of age in a supportive and nurturing group environment.
