250th History
Our History
How many Canadians know which is the oldest congregation in Canada? How many Montrealers know that the first Jewish Congregation in Canada began in Montreal 250 years ago?
Though it may not be common knowledge, Montrealers, Quebecers and Canadians will discover that the oldest congregation in Canada, the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue Shearith Israel, will be celebrating a unique milestone in its history, its 250th anniversary.
Montrealers congregated to pray. Even at that time, there were many members that came from prominent families that included the Joseph, Hays, David, Solomon and Wolff families.
Today the Spanish & Portuguese synagogue is home to a culturally diverse membership of over 800 families. Many of these families emigrated to Canada from such countries as Iraq, Morocco, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Ethiopia and from countries in Eastern Europe. Our most recent members come from France.
