Bar/Bat Mitzvah

When Jewish children enter adolescence, it is an exceptional time in our religion. We welcome any and all families who wish to celebrate their child’s growth into adulthood and Judaism at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue.

The preparation for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah should begin at least a year in advance, depending on your child’s familiarity and comfort level with Hebrew and speaking in public. The first step would be to meet with Hazan Daniel Benlolo to introduce your child and discuss the specifics of the date, the reading of that week and other details about this joyous occasion. Over the years he has taught over 1000 children their readings, and he enjoys working with children. He feels that it is his mission to teach with enthusiasm and to encourage everyone to do the best of their ability.

Once engaged, your son or daughter will meet with Hazan Benlolo so that the Hazan can educate and tutor them in preparation for their big day. During this time, your child will also be tutored in Jewish values pertaining to their Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

For more information on how to enroll your child in Bar/Bat Mitzvah lessons at the synagogue, please contact: Hazan Daniel Benlolo

If your daughter is not interested or comfortable in having her Bat Mitzvah on her own, please note that the Youth Section also organizes a Group Bat Mitzvah Program for 11- and 12-year-old girls so that they may celebrate their coming of age in a supportive and nurturing group environment. For more information about the Group Bat Mitzvah Program, please contact:  Hazan Daniel Benlolo
