"And Moshe spoke… Let G-d…appoint a man over the congregation who will go out before them…will lead them out…And G-d said unto Moshe – Take unto you Yehoshua the son of Nun, a man in whom there is spirit…" (27, 15-18)
Reaped the fruits
Moshe prayed to G-d to "appoint a man over the congregation" and he asked that one of his sons take his place.
G-d replied: "I have already chosen the future leader: "…and he who serves his master shall be honored" (Mishlei). Although your sons are as wise as your student Yehoshua and although neither can replace you, nevertheless your sons are not equal to Yehoshua in their love of Torah.
Yehoshua invested his every last ounce of strength to gain wisdom because he loves the Torah so greatly. In his extreme eagerness to serve you, his teacher, he disregarded his own dignity. He comes to the Beit Hamedrash early each day and leaves late in order to arrange the benches (of the teachers who used to sit on benches) and the mats (of the students who used to sit on the floor). His devotion to Torah is unsurpassed. Now he will reap the fruits of his love for Torah. He will lead the Jewish people."
