A Tribute to Naïm Kattan z'l

Our community has lost one of its giant pillars of letters, of nobility of spirit and of wisdom in Naïm Kattan Z’L.

Naïm proudly attached himself to the Spanish & Portuguese Congregation since his arrival in Montreal in 1954.

Naïm Kattan was our erudite scholar whom we regularly consulted to illuminate our study periods with his reflections. He was the rightful inheritor of a long line of sages of Babylon, so much so that he could at any time offer comment, whether on an obscure passage of the Talmud or while taking a seat at a round table to glorify Quebec’s multiculturalism.

In lieu of his immigrant experience, he was ever one to encourage the use of the French language as a vehicle of social cohesion and harmony to his anglophone fellow citizens. He was the quintissential bridge builder between people and different cultures.

Following the ritual Shabbat services, he would find himself surrounded and admired by one and all. Affable, smiling and courteous, he had the modesty of men of stature and substance, who dispense with the need to showcase their successes to gain admiration.

An exhaustive list of his works and career would take far more numerous lines of homage than we extend to him in this article.

Our Congregation extended him a vibrant tribute on the occasion of his 80th birthday, in the presence of dignitaries on the floor, such as Gaston Miron, Jacques Godbout, Jacques Allard...the staff at Éditions Hurtubise.

I recall in particular, the emotion that gripped him when his son, Emmanuel, surprised him by joining in this celebration. Thinking he was tied up in his business affairs in New York, it was the least of his father’s expectations. Naïm, overridden with tears remained transfixed for a moment, before rushing toward his son to embrace him, overcome with emotion amid the applause from the assembly.

The popular euphemism for announcing a decease would be ʺdisappearance.ʺ Nothing is truer for Naïm Kattan. He has just disappeared for a time, the time for each of us to reread one of his works, to find him once again close by.

The Spanish & Portuguese Congregation, its president and members extend toward his son, Emmanuel, and his family their heartfelt condolences.
